Airline Passengers Fight Back With Anti-Hijacking Organization
Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, January 21, 2002-In answer to the terrorist attacks of September 11, Bill Brooks, a fifty-one-year-old businessman and former member of the U.S. Army Security Agency, has formed Flight Patriots LLC. The organization's primary purpose is to prepare its members to do whatever is necessary to thwart attacks on airplanes. Flight Patriots' Web site, www.flightpatriots.com, will make available such pertinent information as the safety record of individual airports and airlines. The site will also offer airline passengers and concerned citizens everywhere, advice on how to help prevent a hijacking, including how to attack an armed hijacker.
Not all the advice concerns physical resistance. Sometimes it's just teaching passengers how to passively assist by observing. It also points out ways to detect a potential hijack situation. Mr. Brooks says, "Flight Patriots is not a call for vigilantism, but rather a logical response to terrorism. Although it is the duty of all airline passengers to do whatever is within their power to prevent or foil an attempted hijacking, sometimes this may include simply staying in your seat and staying out of the way of airline crews and security personnel."
Members of Flight Patriots pledge to resist, without regard to personal consequences, any attempt by hijackers to take control of any passenger airliner. Inspired by the actions of the people on United Flight 93 who are thought to have diverted the hijacked plane from crashing into the White House, Flight Patriots members are committed to preventing another airliner from being used as a weapon in a terrorist attack.
Brooks says, "Since September 11th, many Americans have felt powerless to assist the fight against international terrorism, and specifically to combat those that would hijack passenger planes and use them as weapons against this country."
He believes that Flight 93 was a microcosm of the situation in the US today as he recalls one of the American heroes, Todd Beamer, whose last words before taking action against the hijackers were, "Are you guys ready? Let's roll." He also quotes wife Lisa Beamer's comments about her husband; "It's about standing up for what you believe in and taking action without thought to the personal consequences." Those words encompass the core beliefs of Flight Patriots.
In his own words, Mr. Brooks states the reason he organized Flight Patriots, "We are threatened by unreasoning haters of life, and we have a choice: we can sit in fear, or in denial that the situation is lethal---or we can fight against our would-be murderers."
